Henrique Alvim Corrêa's Martian Emerges from Cylinder – War of the Worlds 1906
Extraterrestrial invasion technology is depicted here in the form of a massive grooved Martian cylinder — the alien spacecraft that bore the invaders to Earth — its hatch yawning open to reveal a grotesque tentacled Martian creature with glittering compound eyes peering out at a terrified Victorian gentleman pressed against a rocky embankment. Corrêa's masterful pencil and ink draftsmanship captures the existential horror of H.G. Wells' alien landing with extraordinary intimacy and dread.

Blimey, that slimy Martian thing is crawling right out of its cylinder and staring straight at that poor bloke — I'd have legged it long before now! The tentacles alone gave me nightmares for a week after my older brother showed me this book.
