Union, N.H. in the Future – Edwardian Retro-Futurist Fantasy Postcard c.1905
A New Hampshire villager in 1905 would have laughed and marveled in equal measure at this cheeky composite postcard imagining their modest town transformed by tomorrow's technology. Over a dirt crossroads floats an 'East Lake' dirigible, hot-air balloons drift lazily, and an elevated railroad carries a Rochester-bound train above street-level trolleys marked 'Union Milton Mills' and 'Seeing Union.' A subway entrance to Milton anchors the right corner — all improbably crammed into one sleepy rural intersection.
Charming rather than lurid, this novelty postcard belongs in a museum of Americana and early futurism. It lacks pulp drama but wins on earnest small-town ambition — a village dreaming big in halftone.
