Weird Tales July 1927 – 'Return of the Master' by H. Warner Munn Cover
Signed by C.C. Senf, Weird Tales' house artist of the late 1920s known for his theatrical, painterly compositions and vivid female figures, this cover depicts a red-haired woman in a flowing coral dress mid-flight, arms raised dramatically as a wild-eyed, disheveled old man lunges from the shadows behind her. A kerosene lamp glows faintly in the dark background, amplifying the Gothic menace. Senf's oil-like brushwork and Expressionist use of shadow are hallmarks of his distinctive Weird Tales style.
More Bram Stoker than Buck Rogers — the terror is visceral and human rather than cosmic, but Senf's dramatic staging and the woman's wild-eyed flight crank the Gothic pulp energy well into the red zone.
