Henrique Alvim Corrêa's Martian Creature, War of the Worlds 1906
Before you stands one of the most haunting depictions of H.G. Wells's Martian invaders ever committed to paper. Rendered in masterly pen-and-ink by Brazilian artist Henrique Alvim Corrêa for the 1906 Belgian edition of 'La Guerre des Mondes,' this gaunt, bilaterally-symmetrical alien stands upright on splayed, taloned feet, its distended torso topped by a bulbous cranium — intellect made monstrous. Corrêa's crosshatching gives the creature a visceral, anatomical weight that no subsequent illustrator has fully surpassed.
