Castle of Terror — Amazing Stories November 1948 Goblin Menace Cover
Unlike the hard-science rocket-and-robot covers that dominated Amazing Stories under Hugo Gernsback, this late-1940s issue leans into fantasy horror, echoing the darker, more atmospheric direction the magazine took under editor Raymond Palmer. A ragged figure cowers before a brooding medieval castle perched on rocky heights while two grotesque, pointy-eared goblins lurk menacingly in the foreground — a scene closer to weird fantasy than hard SF, rendered in loose, painterly gouache with dramatic chiaroscuro and earthy greens and ochres.
The leering goblins and the blood-curdling tagline 'It'll Chill Your Blood!' are solid newsstand bait, though the composition is more storybook than screaming pulp chaos. The castle drama is atmospheric but lacks the over-the-top energy of peak Amazing Stories covers.
