Circe Confronts a Knight — Fantastic Adventures, August 1941
Surprisingly mythological for a science fiction pulp, this August 1941 Fantastic Adventures cover depicts a luminous, red-gowned Circe cracking a whip above a heavily armored Renaissance knight who stands his ground with sword and shield. The sorceress glows with supernatural energy while the knight's elaborate blue-plumed helmet and detailed plate armor reveal an illustrator comfortable with historical costuming. The dramatic chiaroscuro lighting and rich purples and greens push this squarely into high fantasy territory.
A glamorous witch with a whip versus a fully armored conquistador is exactly the kind of scenario that demands no further justification in 1941. The glowing aura around Circe suggests she has already won, but the knight's posture suggests he has not received that memo.
