Edison's Conquest of Mars: Man with Disruptor Device Illustration

This illustration is from Garrett P. Serviss's 1898 pulp serial Edison's Conquest of Mars, not H.G. Wells' The Invisible Man. The scene depicts a man in a rugged, rocky or architectural setting holding a device, likely one of the futuristic weapons or tools featured in Serviss's tale of interplanetary war and Earth's counterattack against Martian invaders. The cross-hatched pen-and-ink style is typical of period newspaper syndication illustrations accompanying the original serialized text.

It's creepy the way you can almost see him but not quite — like he could walk right past you and you'd never know. Wish there was more action, but the idea of a man you can't see carrying a bottle gives me the chills.
