Published in May 1923, this is one of the earliest issues of Weird Tales — the legendary pulp that would go on to publish Lovecraft, Howard, and Clark Ashton Smith — at a moment when American genre fiction was still defining the boundaries between horror, fantasy, and science fiction. A pale, slack-jawed man and a wild-eyed woman in crimson robes conjure swirling vapors from a bubbling cauldron, flanked by candelabras in a murky, smoke-filled darkness. The loose, atmospheric brushwork gives the scene genuine menace.
A wild-eyed sorceress with arms thrown wide, summoning spectral smoke from a bubbling cauldron while a horrified companion looks on — in only the third issue of what would become the most influential weird fiction magazine ever printed. The red medallion screaming 'A Stupendous Novel of The World's End' seals the deal.
