Surprisingly prescient for 1963, this cover depicts a retro-futurist lunar lander that uncannily anticipates the real Apollo LM design — complete with spindly legs, dish-footed landing pads, and a retrorocket blast scorching the cratered Moon surface. The checkered red-and-black command module adds a jaunty racing aesthetic to what might otherwise be serious hard-SF imagery. Earth hangs in the star-flecked background, glowing blue-green, while the craft's exhaust plume illuminates fresh impact craters below.
A remarkably sober cover for Amazing Stories — no tentacles, no imperiled women, just a sensible spacecraft doing sensible spacecraft things. The checkered paint job is the sole concession to reckless abandon.
