En L'An 2000: Automated Orchestra of the Future, c.1900 French Chromolithograph
The human musicians have been replaced — mechanical instruments play themselves in the orchestra pit while a bewildered conductor gestures uselessly at the self-operating machines. On stage, costumed performers carry on with their operatic drama, oblivious to the technological revolution unfolding below them. A packed theater of elegantly dressed Parisians watches the spectacle, perhaps not yet realizing that automation has rendered the virtuoso obsolete. This whimsical vision of Year 2000 France captures Belle Époque anxieties about industrialization with charming naivety.
Oh man, this little card is a gem — a Victorian Frenchman imagined robot orchestras a full century before MIDI existed! It's not explosive pulp energy, but the deadpan weirdness of automated harps and brass playing themselves while opera singers ham it up is absolutely delightful.
