Why does my KDP paperback cover look cropped or shifted?

You upload your paperback cover file to KDP and the preview looks wrong. Your title is off-center. A slice of your artwork has vanished from the edge. The spine text is creeping onto the back cover. You check your file: it’s high-resolution and looks flawless in your design software. You try exporting a larger version. The problem persists.

Most forum advice gets this wrong. The issue is usually your file’s shape, not its size.

How KDP Actually Handles Your Cover Art

KDP doesn’t just place your image onto the cover template. It fills the entire template area with your image. If the proportions of your file don’t match the template’s proportions exactly, KDP will scale your image up until it covers every corner, then crop off whatever spills over the edges.

This one process explains every common cover glitch:

• Lost artwork on the edges: Your file was proportionally too wide or too tall, so the excess was trimmed.
• Misaligned front cover elements: The crop removed more from one panel than you planned for, throwing off your careful centering.
• Spine text drifting onto another panel: The spine zone you designed no longer aligns with the actual, physical fold of the book.

A misaligned spine is the costliest error, as it’s the flaw a reader sees first on the shelf.

The Math Behind a Real Cover

Take a 5” × 8” book with 349 pages on cream paper:

• Spine Width: 349 pages × 0.0025″ per page = 0.8725″
• Full Wrap Size: (2 × 5″ front/back) + 0.8725″ spine + (2 × 0.125″ bleed) = 11.1225″ wide × 8.25″ tall
• Required Aspect Ratio: 11.1225″ ÷ 8.25″ = 1.348

Now, imagine your cover file is 4200 × 2962 pixels. That’s a ratio of 1.418. It has plenty of pixels and looks like a book wrap, but it’s proportionally wider than KDP’s required canvas. To fit the 8.25″ height, KDP scales it up and crops the extra width: about 0.29″ gone from each side. That’s nearly a third of an inch of your back cover text vanished, and every panel boundary you used for layout is now incorrect.

Uploading a “bigger file” won’t solve this. The shape is wrong at any resolution.

Diagnose Your File in Five Minutes

1. Calculate your exact wrap dimensions. Width = (2 × Trim Width) + Spine Width + 0.25″. Height = Trim Height + 0.25″. Spine Width = Page Count × Paper Caliper (Cream: 0.0025″, White: 0.002252″, Premium Color: 0.002347″). Or, skip the math and use the cover size calculator.

2. Find your file’s aspect ratio. Divide its pixel width by its pixel height.

3. Compare the two numbers. If your file’s ratio and the required wrap ratio differ by more than 0.005, you’ve found the bug. At a cover height of 8–9 inches, an error of just 0.01 is enough to shift edges noticeably.

How to Fix It

Rebuild your canvas using the exact wrap dimensions. At 300 DPI, multiply every inch measurement by 300. (The 5×8 example becomes 3337 × 2475 pixels). Place your artwork onto this perfect canvas instead of trying to resize your existing art to fit.

While you’re fixing the canvas, address the other common rejection zones:

• Bleed: The outermost 0.125″ on every side gets cut off. Backgrounds must extend into this area; any text or critical elements must stay at least 0.25″ inside the trim line.
• Spine Folds: Keep all spine text at least 0.0625″ away from each fold line. Also, KDP rejects spine text outright on books of 79 pages or fewer, and most design tools hide it below roughly 100 pages—the spine is simply too narrow.

One crucial habit prevents this entire class of error: If your page count changes, your cover must change. Every added page widens the spine, which changes the total wrap dimensions and its aspect ratio. A cover built for a 320-page draft will be wrong for a 349-page final book—close enough to upload, but wrong enough to misalign the spine.
