A Drama in the Air — Jules Verne Balloon Engraving by Émile Bayard

This engraving illustrates Jules Verne's short story 'A Drama in the Air,' in which a balloon ascent turns perilous when a mysterious, wild-eyed passenger becomes violently unstable mid-flight, endangering the narrator far above a European city. The scene captures the tense confrontation in the wicker gondola, with rigging and rope coils rendered in period detail, rooftops and church spires visible below, emphasizing the vertiginous danger of the flight.

Gosh, that wild-haired fellow looks like he might toss the other chap right out of the basket! Not as exciting as a rocket ship, but sailing over the rooftops in a balloon still gives me goosebumps.
