What Stays the Same After You Swap

All the crucial elements of your book’s listing remain intact. Your ASIN, all accumulated reviews, your sales rank, and the book’s URL are permanent. Think of a cover update as simply replacing a file, not re-publishing the entire work. Importantly, your book stays live for sale throughout the review process; customers will just see the old cover until the new one is approved.

The Realistic Timetable You Can Expect

Crucial Checks Before You Hit Upload

1. Title and Author Must Match Exactly. Your new cover’s title and author name must be identical to what’s in your KDP metadata. Even a creative redesign that changes the font or styling can be rejected if the text doesn’t match precisely.
2. Recalculate Your Cover Size if the Interior Changed. Did you also revise the manuscript, changing the page count or paper type? If so, the spine width is now different, and you must rebuild the entire cover wrap. Always verify the new dimensions with the cover size calculator. Using a new design on an old template is a direct path to the cropped-cover problem.
3. Update Both Paperback and eBook Covers. The paperback wrap and the eBook cover (which must be 1600 × 2560 pixels, per the specifications here) are separate uploads. Swapping one but forgetting the other creates a glaring mismatch on your book’s sales page.
4. Declare AI-Generated Art if Applicable. The rules about disclosing AI-generated content apply to cover updates as well. Be sure you know what needs to be declared.
