Swapping out your cover is often the single best move for a stagnant book. On KDP, it’s a straightforward, free process that doesn’t disrupt your book’s vital stats. The real hurdles for most authors are the waiting periods and a few specific, easy-to-overlook rules.
What Stays the Same After You Swap
All the crucial elements of your book’s listing remain intact. Your ASIN, all accumulated reviews, your sales rank, and the book’s URL are permanent. Think of a cover update as simply replacing a file, not re-publishing the entire work. Importantly, your book stays live for sale throughout the review process; customers will just see the old cover until the new one is approved.
The Realistic Timetable You Can Expect
Here’s a breakdown of what happens and how long each step typically takes:

The delay in the Look Inside preview is a common source of confusion. It is normal for the product page to show the new cover while the preview still shows the old one for up to 10 business days. After that, KDP Support can look it up by ASIN.
Before uploading
- Title and author have to match the metadata. Your new cover’s title and author name must be identical to what’s in your KDP metadata. Even a creative redesign that changes the font or styling can be rejected if the text doesn’t match precisely.
- Recalculate Your Cover Size if the Interior Changed. Did you also revise the manuscript, changing the page count or paper type? If so, the spine width is now different and the cover wrap has to be rebuilt. The cover size calculator gives the new dimensions. Using a new design on an old template is a direct path to the cropped-cover problem.
- Update Both Paperback and eBook Covers. The paperback wrap and the eBook cover (which must be 1600 × 2560 pixels, per the specifications here) are separate uploads. Swapping one but forgetting the other creates a glaring mismatch on your book’s sales page.
- Declare AI-Generated Art if Applicable. The rules about disclosing AI-generated content apply to cover updates as well. What needs to be declared is covered separately.
Where the Old Cover Might Stick Around
Platforms like Goodreads, BookBub, other retailers, and even some reader apps maintain their own cached cover images. Goodreads, in particular, does not automatically sync with Amazon; updates there are typically handled by volunteer librarians upon request. Expect it to take a week or two for the wider book ecosystem to reflect your change. Re-uploading to KDP does not speed this up; the lag is elsewhere.
